THE FORBIDDEN
Some laws survive because nobody remembers who wrote them.
Across different worlds, they endure in bargains, warnings, and customs too old to question. A witness must watch without interfering. A promise carries a price beyond the moment it is broken. What one person pays to forget may remain inside someone else.
The Forbidden live where such boundaries become personal. What may be known. What may be spoken. What can be taken from a person, and who decides whether it ever belonged to them.
Some have spent centuries obeying. Some know enough to threaten people who believed themselves beyond consequence. Others carry secrets they cannot set down. Their stories begin in different places, under different rules, with reasons of their own to keep a boundary intact or finally cross it.
There is no promise that defiance will save anyone. A warning can change a life. So can a silence. The power to free someone from a memory is also the power to take something they might have chosen to keep.
Yet beneath these separate lives, the old prohibitions echo one another. Different words. Different punishments. The same insistence that certain things must never be disturbed.
Who first decided where those boundaries belonged—and what were they afraid would happen if someone crossed them?

Elizabeth Steele
Elizabeth Steele’s frame was empty. The other portraits were watching.
She was found folded beneath a dresser, her name signed in her own hand. Now she is back in the castle, her portrait sent away to be mended. She has offered no explanation.

Dorian
His portrait arrived unsigned. The stories about him did not.
Fully framed and propped against a wall, it drew the attention of a visitor who recognized the face.
“That’s Dorian. He’s trouble.”
Apparently, there are stories about him in houses that haven’t stood for centuries. The details change with the telling. In the version this visitor had heard, someone went with him.
Willingly? That depends on who is telling it.
Everyone else has had a turn telling Dorian’s story. Perhaps it is time to hear his.
