COSMIC GOTHIC HORROR

The Realm of Susurrus

Before the Whispers

Before the first castle rose, there was a warning no one understood.

Not everything that reaches the stone is meant to be kept.

Once, Susurrus was a realm much like any other. Its people loved, fought, grieved, and made mistakes. They suffered. They learned. They carried the weight of being alive.

Then the sky tore open.

Something ancient spilled through the wound, darkening the mountains, poisoning the waters, and changing everything it touched.

From the corrupted stone, a castle emerged.

And from that castle, four others rose, scattered across a realm that would never again be what it had been.

Within them, the Keepers began their work.

Confessions were gathered. Desires that would never be fulfilled were recorded. The forsaken were bound. What the world had lost was preserved.

The people suffered less.

And slowly, they became less.

They remembered their mistakes but no longer understood what those mistakes had cost. They remembered those they had loved but could no longer feel the full weight of losing them.

The Castle believed it was saving them.

For centuries, nothing challenged that belief.

Until something changed.

For the first time, footsteps approached places no living soul had ever entered.

And the Keepers, who had spent an eternity knowing exactly what they were made to do, were about to discover something they had never been created to understand.

A life beyond their purpose.

Realm of Susurrus.

The stone remembers everything.

But it has never learned what it means to live.

The Keepers

Kith — The Weight of What Is Spoken

There are two confessions Kith will not look at.

In the Rotunda, the others arrive without pause. A man who has stolen from his brother for eleven years. A woman who has learned to speak her dead child’s name without her voice breaking. Truths their owners carry through ordinary rooms, hidden from everyone around them.

Kith receives them all.

Each confession takes shape in an orb at his shoulder. He carries them into the curved walls, where they fuse with the stone and join the light of thousands already held there. The pressure behind his eyes never leaves. Another confession is always coming.

Then his path takes him past the shelf.

Two orbs rest there, separate from the walls. A fine dust has gathered on them, though the air in this room does not move. He knows the weight of what they contain.

His gaze drops to the floor. The next confession arrives.

What has he left on that shelf?

Lith — The Weight of What Is Wanted

The ledger opens before Lith touches it.

The quill is already waiting. Somewhere below the castle, someone has begun to want something badly enough for a light to appear in the dark.

He sits, and a woman’s unlived future settles behind his sternum. Eleven years spent imagining a person who chose her. A particular room. The light of a morning she will never wake into.

The ink turns burgundy.

Next comes a man who still visits the life he abandoned twenty years ago. Then a girl who cannot name what she wants, only the hollow where it should be. The quill takes the color of ash.

Lith receives each of them. The pages fill. The volumes descend into the libraries below.

For centuries, other people’s wanting has occupied every available space inside him. He keeps writing, with nothing of his own to set against it.

If a desire ever rose from somewhere within him, would he know it was his?

Myth — The Weight of What Remains

Nothing in Susurrus has ever successfully remained lost from Myth.

Tonight, a dead woman finds him first.

Her touch settles against the back of his neck, cold fingers without weight. She is still trying to have a conversation she put off while she was alive. He feels the words she intended to say, the room she pictured, the relief she believed would follow.

He waits while her grief moves through him.

At his belt hangs a bag that has not been empty in centuries. His fingers find her ring among the remnants. At its touch, she recognizes something of herself, and the binding completes.

The bag grows heavier.

He turns toward another waiting spirit. With every step, the grief of those already bound passes into him. He cannot remember the last time one of his own recollections kept its original color.

For three steps, he wonders whether always finding the lost is something to be proud of.

Ahead, the next spirit tries to escape.

Ryth — The Weight of What Is Lost

The crow is always there before Ryth opens his eyes.

He has never determined where it goes when he is unaware of it. This morning, it watches the tree line until he follows its gaze.

An animal stands between the roots. Ryth knows its species. He knows how few remain. Its eyes are clear, but its body has found the position that costs it least to hold.

He takes a scale from his coat and kneels.

Before the work, he prays to the living thing in front of him. The prayer was never part of his function. He added it himself, long ago, though it has never changed the outcome.

When the loss comes, a new scar writes itself across his collarbone. He waits until it is finished.

The crow makes a sound almost like acknowledgment.

Ryth turns to look at it. For a long moment, its black eye holds his, and he cannot locate the bottom of what is looking back.

He looks away first. He always does.
